Our skin is the largest organ, covering the whole body. The functions of this valuable and largest organ are to regulate body temperature, to assist respiration through gas exchange and to assist excretion through sweating. The skin also protects the body from external influences.
The skin consists of three layers:
* Outer Skin (Epidermis)
* Inner Skin (Dermis)
* Subcutaneous Layer (Subcutis, part of the inner skin)
Outer Skin (Epidermis)
* It is the layer that protects the lower layers of the skin.
* There are no blood vessels or nerves in this layer.
* The outer part of the epidermis is made up of dead cells.
* It contains the cells that determine skin colour.
* It protects the skin from harmful rays.
Inner Skin (Dermis)
* It is thicker than the epidermis and consists of living cells.
* It contains blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair muscles and sensory receptors.
* "It gives the skin its elasticity and contains fine elastic fibres."
Subcutaneous Layer (Subcutis)
"In fact, there is no clear boundary between the dermis and the subcutis, and the thickness and transitional features of both layers vary according to sex, age, nutritional status and living conditions, and the area of the body.
* It protects the body against impacts and blows and prevents heat loss from the body.
* Sweat glands are located here and assist excretion.
