Enzyme peel (Cosmelan) is a new method used to treat brown patches on the skin. This special peeling system contains a blend of acids (kojic acid, phytic acid, azelaic acid and vitamin C) that break down melanin, the substance that forms the pigmentation. This special blend reduces the production of melanin and treats the pigmentation.
How effective is the enzyme peel (Cosmelan) in treating pigmentation?
The acids in the enzyme peel reduce the production of melanin, the substance that forms the pigmentation. In this way it both reduces existing pigmentation and prevents new pigmentation from forming.
The enzyme peel (also called a light peel) reduces melanin formation in the skin by suppressing tyrosinase, the enzyme that turns secreted melanin dark. It provides effective treatment by lightening the pigmented areas of the skin.
How is the enzyme peel (Cosmelan) applied?
Before the treatment, the skin is examined and the condition of the pigmentation is checked. The skin is mechanically cleansed with a special purifying cleanser. The enzyme peel product is applied to the clean skin with a moistened sponge, in several layers on the pigmented areas. The peel product begins to be absorbed into the skin. Depending on the sensitivity of the skin and the intensity of the pigmentation, the peel product is left on the skin for about 4-8 hours. Because the product is absorbed into the skin during this time, it leaves no residue on the skin. At the end of this time, the product is removed with water. Moisturising and nourishing creams are then applied. Special follow-up creams must be used in the days after the treatment.
The Difference from Chemical Peels
A chemical peel works by peeling off the upper layer of the skin. An enzyme peel, on the other hand, works by reducing the formation of melanin in the lower layer of the skin. In this respect, the enzyme peel gives a more effective result in removing skin pigmentation.
Which Types of Pigmentation Is the Enzyme Peel Effective On?
Although it is effective on all types of pigmentation on the body, it is most often used effectively to treat sunspots, lentigines (age spots) and melasma (pregnancy mask).
Conditions to Be Checked Before an Enzyme Peel
* Active infection and open wounds
* Active cold sore (herpes) virus infection
* A medium or deep peel in the last 3-12 months
* Heavy smoking
* Pregnancy and breastfeeding
The Enzyme Peel Treatment Process
The treatment consists of two stages. In the first stage, the skin is cleansed and a mask is applied, which stays on the skin for 8 hours. It is then washed off with water and the second stage begins. In this stage, the patient uses the cream given to them for 3 months and observes the result of the treatment. Results are seen from the first week, with full results after 4-6 weeks.
How long does the effect last?
The lightening of pigmentation achieved with the enzyme peel lasts a long time. However, pigmentation may return with lack of sun protection, certain hormonal conditions or medication use, so protective measures must be taken.
Does it have any side effects or risks?
The advantage of the enzyme peel over other chemical peels is its very low risk of side effects. The risk of residual pigmentation seen with classic chemical peels does not exist with the enzyme peel.
Who is pigmentation treatment with the enzyme peel suitable for?
The enzyme peel can be safely applied to pregnancy-related pigmentation, sunspots and age-related pigmentation.
Advice After an Enzyme Peel
Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds. High-factor sunscreen should also be used after the treatment. Wearing a hat and sunglasses in the summer months is among the preventive measures.
Do not shower on the first day; a lukewarm shower is preferable for 1 week.
